Indeed, there are very few, if any, studies that have reported the effect of the functional appliances on Class III malocclusions. It was thus the goal of this study to investigate the changes that results from the treatment of Class III patients with the type C Bimler appliance. Materials and methods. Thirty patients with Class III malocclusion (12 males and 18 females) were included in this study. The mean age of the subjects was nine years and eight months at the beginning of the treatment. These patients were treated by Bimler with his type C functional appliance. The mean treatment period was two years and three months. The lateral cephalometric radiographs used in this study were analyzed at the start of treatment (T1) and at the end of the treatment (T2). Eight linear and six angular measurements were made to evaluate the changes achieved by the Bimler type C functional appliance. The Student's and paired t-test were used to analyze the data collected in this study. Results. For no measurement was there a statistically significant difference (p=0.05) between the males and the females. As a result, the separating by gender was abandoned, and the male and female treatment groups were combined to provide 30 subjects. The most significant changes observed were three angular measurements (ANB, Upper incisor to SN, IMPA) and seven linear measurements (Co-A, Co-Gn, Pg-Na perpendicular, ANS-Me, Wits, Overjet, Lower incisor to APo) (p<0.0001). No significant change was observed in the mean value of one of the linear measurement (A-Na perpendicular). Favorable skeletal and dentoalveolar effects were observed. Effects of the aging-related loss in lower extremity strength on the feasible region for balance recovery. $49.99 A backward fall is a major cause of hip fractures. Hip fractures have the potential to increase the mortality rate of older adults. Thus, the prevention of backward falls by older adults is a critical subject to be studied. Specifically, it remains unknown what effect aging-related losses in muscle strength have on the ability to recover balance by stepping following a backward loss of balance. There were two specific aims in this study. The first aim was to develop two-dimensional musculoskeletal models of young and older adults. The second aim was to quantify the effects of the normal aging-related loss in lower extremity strength on the ability to recover balance following a backward step from a backward balance loss by describing the feasible regions of balance recovery. Two-dimensional musculotendon models of young and older adults were developed and used in a six-link model to simulate backward balance recovery of young and older adults. The feasible regions for young and older adults were described for two combinations of initial backward and downward velocities: 15% body height/s (Bh/s) (condition 1) and 30% Bh/s (condition 2). For condition 1, older adults showed a 25% foot length (fl) more posterior forward boundary at a hip height of 50% Bh and a 12.2% fl more anterior rear boundary at 47.5% Bh than young adults. For condition 2, older adults showed a 6.4% fl more posterior forward boundary at 48.5% Bh and a 12.8% fl more anterior rear boundary at 47.5% Bh than young adults. The feasible regions for young and older adults showed similar ranges of hip height in conditions 1 and 2. Estrogenic activity of the polybrominated diphenyl ether flame retardant mixture DE-71. $49.99 Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are widely used flame retardants suspected to act as endocrine disruptors. We tested the commercial PBDE mixture DE-71 and its in vivo metabolites for estrogenic activity. MCF-7 breast cancer cells culture, ERE-luciferase gene expression, 3H-beta-estradiol displacement from recombinant ERalpha, and ovariectomized (OVX) mice served as bioassays. Although DE-71 did not bind ERalpha, it was able to increase MCF-7 cell proliferation and this was prevented by the antiestrogen fulvestrant. DE-71 co-treatment reduced the effect of estradiol in MCF-7 cells. In the OVX mouse (BALB/c) 3-day assay, DE-71 administered alone had no effect on uterine or vaginal tissues but when administered subcutaneously potentiated estradiol's effect on uterine weight in a dose-dependent manner. DE-71 administered SQ to BALB/c mice for 34 days slightly increased uterine epithelial height (UEH), vaginal epithelial thickness (VET) and mammary ductal lumen area, and attenuated the estradiol-induced increase in UEH; these effects were not seen in C57BL/6 mice. DE-71 increased liver weight in BALB/c, C57BL/6 and estrogen receptor-alpha knockout (ERalphaKO) mice. Liver cytochrome P450 1A (CYP1A) and CYP2B activities increased 2.5-fold and 7-fold respectively when DE-71 was administered PO, but only CYP2B increased (5-fold) after SQ treatment. Estrogenic activity of the polybrominated diphenyl ether flame retardant mixture DE-71. $108 Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are widely used flame retardants suspected to act as endocrine disruptors. We tested the commercial PBDE mixture DE-71 and its in vivo metabolites for estrogenic activity. MCF-7 breast cancer cells culture, ERE-luciferase gene expression, 3H-beta-estradiol displacement from recombinant ERalpha, and ovariectomized (OVX) mice served as bioassays. Although DE-71 did not bind ERalpha, it was able to increase MCF-7 cell proliferation and this was prevented by the antiestrogen fulvestrant. DE-71 co-treatment reduced the effect of estradiol in MCF-7 cells. In the OVX mouse (BALB/c) 3-day assay, DE-71 administered alone had no effect on uterine or vaginal tissues but when administered subcutaneously potentiated estradiol's effect on uterine weight in a dose-dependent manner. DE-71 administered SQ to BALB/c mice for 34 days slightly increased uterine epithelial height (UEH), vaginal epithelial thickness (VET) and mammary ductal lumen area, and attenuated the estradiol-induced increase in UEH; these effects were not seen in C57BL/6 mice. DE-71 increased liver weight in BALB/c, C57BL/6 and estrogen receptor-alpha knockout (ERalphaKO) mice. Liver cytochrome P450 1A (CYP1A) and CYP2B activities increased 2.5-fold and 7-fold respectively when DE-71 was administered PO, but only CYP2B increased (5-fold) after SQ treatment. Resting metabolism and metabolic responses to solid and liquid meals in sedentary and exercising college-age males. $49.99 Differences in resting metabolic rate (RMR) were measured in a total of 29 sedentary and exercising college-age males, as were their metabolic responses (diet-induced thermogenesis, DIT) to solid and liquid meals. A group of 9 males was classified as sedentary, 11 males were classified as endurance (aerobic) exercisers, and 9 males were classified as weight lifters (resistance exercise). Resting metabolism was measured soon after waking; DIT for each meal was measured immediately following meal consumption, and then every 30 minutes for 3 hours. RMR and DIT were measured via indirect calorimetry, height was determined via stadiometer, and all body composition measurements were done with bioelectrical impedance. No significant differences existed between groups for age, body mass index (BMI), percent body fat, fat-free mass (ffm), percent ffm, and hydration. Moreover, no significant differences existed in DIT based on meal form (Eta2 = 0.049, F = 1.336, p = 0.258). However, there was a significant overall metabolic increase based on group (Eta 2 = 0.271, F = 4.844, p = 0.016). Specifically, both exercise groups had a significantly (p < 0.05) greater RMR when compared to the sedentary group; this increased RMR indicated that the exercise groups expended more energy expended more energy at rest than did the sedentary group. There were no significant RMR differences between the exercising groups (p = 0.843). RMR and DIT were negatively correlated (r = -0.38; p = 0.023). The variables positively correlated with RMR include ffm (r = 0.59; p < 0.001), and BMI (r = 0.39; p = 0.020). In conclusion, these findings give further support to the importance of exercise, specifically frequent and intense exercise, in amplifying resting metabolic rate and increasing total energy expenditure. |
