Estimating injury severity and cost in two-vehicle crashes. $49.99 This dissertation performs a comprehensive analysis of the effect of different environmental, demographic and vehicle variables on the severity of two-vehicle crashes. The limitations associated with previous studies have been addressed by using a large crash database, properly defining the independent variables, using appropriate statistical models, and by considering the effect of factors normally unaccounted for such as crash type, impact speed, and weight or height incompatibilities between the two vehicles.;The use of multinomial logit models at the individual occupant and crash levels provides the flexibility to evaluate variables that have opposing effects at different injury levels (such as airbags). Alternative formulations with interaction terms and with instrumental variables are included. An analysis of marginal probabilities and costs is also provided, which is particularly useful when discussing potential safety treatments with transportation officials, politicians and other decision makers.;The findings from the different models are consistent and suggest that the type of crash has a great impact on severity. Age is the most significant demographic variable, with children and older occupants being least and most likely to be injured, respectively. Behavior also seems to be critical, as the use of seatbelts greatly decreases occupant injuries. Film cooling enhancement with surface restructure. $49.99 Discrete-hole film cooling is used extensively in turbine components. In past decades, many research works concerning this technique have been published. Recently, efforts have been directed at seeking technologies that would increase film cooling effectiveness. Particularly, surface reshaping through protective coatings, such as a thermal barrier coating (TBC), is very attractive to turbine designers because extra machining work is not needed for its application. In the present work, film cooling enhancement with surface restructure is experimentally studied using an infrared (IR) imaging technique.;The first surface structure studied is the surface with flow-aligned blockers. The studied configurations include single-hole and three-hole-row structures. The single-hole case is used for studying the effects of blocker design parameters, which include blocker height (0.2D, 0.4D, and 0.6D), distance between two neighboring blockers (0.8D, D, and 1.2D), blocker length (2", 4", and 6"), and blowing ratio M (0.43 and 0.93). The design with the best performance is chosen for the three-hole-row cases.;The second surface shape studied, is the so-called upstream ramp, which is placed in front of a row of film cooling holes. Investigated geometrical parameters include upstream ramp angles (8.5°, 15°, and 24°) and blowing ratio M (0.29, 0.43, 0.57, 0.93, and 1.36). Detailed local film cooling effectiveness and heat transfer coefficient are measured using an IR imaging technique.;The third film cooling concept is the so-called trenched film cooling holes, i.e., film cooling holes sitting in a transverse groove. Genetic and nutritional effects on stem sinuosity in loblolly pine. $49.99 Genetically improved loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) trees under intensive silviculture have demonstrated dramatic increases in wood production. However, increased input intensity has been associated with a higher propensity for certain genotypes to increase stem and branch deformities, as well as reduced disease resistance. The responses of several genotypes of loblolly pine to nutrient additions on stem sinuosity were assessed at three and twelve years of age in two different tests located in South Carolina and North Carolina, respectively.;The objectives of the studies were to assess the effect of nutrient additions and genetics on stem form, particularly stem sinuosity, in loblolly pine. Tissue samples from of newly expanding shoots at the beginning of growing season were taken and analyzed to assess the association between the nutrient concentrations on the tissues and stem sinuosity in five families from two provenances (Atlantic Coastal Plain "ACP" and Lost Pine Texas "LPT"). The second study was established at the ArborGen research facility near Summerville, South Carolina, with six different genotypes of loblolly pine to determine whether high N and low Ca availability caused sinuous growth. In early spring, eight blocks were fertilized with N as (NH4) 2SO4 and Ca as CaSO4. Nutrient concentrations from flushing shoot tissue were examined and then correlated with measures of stem sinuosity.;Results from the study of repeated nutrient additions in North Carolina showed that the addition of nutrients increased stem sinuosity, branch sinuosity, height, and the levels of N, P, K, Mg, Zn, B and S in the woody tissue of newly expanding shoots and decreased the levels of Mn and Cu. The F4 was created by famous motorcycle designer Massimo Tamburini at CRC (Cagiva Research Center), following his work on the Ducati 916. The F4 is unique with its four pipe undertail exhaust, single-sided swingarm, large front forks (49 or 50 mm diameter) and traditional MV Agusta red and silver livery. There were no significant differences in biomass production in wheat and barley with increased biochar concentration.
