Increase the Pressure $16.78 Not as well-known as Crass in America but huge internationally and in England, Conflict, a crew of radical anarchists and animal rights activists, put out a bunch of great records in the '80s and a few decent ones in the '90s. Increase the Pressure is among the best of them. The gatefold vinyl record includes a photo of a march on the front with a black anarchist flag hoisted above the crowd, a shot of a tipped-over police van burning on the back, and a giant photo of Parliament, one of Conflict's main targets, inside, all rendered attractively in black and white. This stuff is not about shock value, as Conflict was involved in every sort of social movement (of which there were many in England in the '80s), and the majority of their songs were about fighting the police, nuclear proliferation, animal rights, and the antiwar movement. The lead track, "Increase the Pressure," is an anthem and call to arms against the government and police, and it's also inspiring, catchy stuff. "From Protest to Resistance" is another classic, violent-sounding Conflict number, while the lyrics are about uniting and not letting politics and infighting sink their opposition movement. Other tunes deal with the cruise missiles that the U.S. placed in England in the '80s ("Cruise...") and mankind's savage treatment of animals ("Tough Shit Mickey"). While not as eloquent as Crass, Conflict delivers their message in a convincing manner, and at least 100 bands took these songs seriously enough to attempt to imitate them. ~ Adam Bregman, Rovi |

Effect of the Bimler functional appliance treatment on Class III patients. $49.99 The effect of the Bimler functional appliance on the treatment of Class III malocclusion is unknown as no previous study has evaluated the effect of this appliance on Class III patients. Indeed, there are very few, if any, studies that have reported the effect of the functional appliances on Class III malocclusions. It was thus the goal of this study to investigate the changes that results from the treatment of Class III patients with the type C Bimler appliance. Materials and methods. Thirty patients with Class III malocclusion (12 males and 18 females) were included in this study. The mean age of the subjects was nine years and eight months at the beginning of the treatment. These patients were treated by Bimler with his type C functional appliance. The mean treatment period was two years and three months. The lateral cephalometric radiographs used in this study were analyzed at the start of treatment (T1) and at the end of the treatment (T2). Eight linear and six angular measurements were made to evaluate the changes achieved by the Bimler type C functional appliance. The Student's and paired t-test were used to analyze the data collected in this study. Results. For no measurement was there a statistically significant difference (p=0.05) between the males and the females. As a result, the separating by gender was abandoned, and the male and female treatment groups were combined to provide 30 subjects. The most significant changes observed were three angular measurements (ANB, Upper incisor to SN, IMPA) and seven linear measurements (Co-A, Co-Gn, Pg-Na perpendicular, ANS-Me, Wits, Overjet, Lower incisor to APo) (p<0.0001). No significant change was observed in the mean value of one of the linear measurement (A-Na perpendicular). Favorable skeletal and dentoalveolar effects were observed. These included: (a) a backward rotation of the mandible combined with an increase in the lower facial height, (b) favorable changes in incisor overjet resulted mainly from |

Estrogenic activity of the polybrominated diphenyl ether flame retardant mixture DE-71. $49.99 Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are widely used flame retardants suspected to act as endocrine disruptors. We tested the commercial PBDE mixture DE-71 and its in vivo metabolites for estrogenic activity. MCF-7 breast cancer cells culture, ERE-luciferase gene expression, 3H-beta-estradiol displacement from recombinant ERalpha, and ovariectomized (OVX) mice served as bioassays. Although DE-71 did not bind ERalpha, it was able to increase MCF-7 cell proliferation and this was prevented by the antiestrogen fulvestrant. DE-71 co-treatment reduced the effect of estradiol in MCF-7 cells. In the OVX mouse (BALB/c) 3-day assay, DE-71 administered alone had no effect on uterine or vaginal tissues but when administered subcutaneously potentiated estradiol's effect on uterine weight in a dose-dependent manner. DE-71 administered SQ to BALB/c mice for 34 days slightly increased uterine epithelial height (UEH), vaginal epithelial thickness (VET) and mammary ductal lumen area, and attenuated the estradiol-induced increase in UEH; these effects were not seen in C57BL/6 mice. DE-71 increased liver weight in BALB/c, C57BL/6 and estrogen receptor-alpha knockout (ERalphaKO) mice. Liver cytochrome P450 1A (CYP1A) and CYP2B activities increased 2.5-fold and 7-fold respectively when DE-71 was administered PO, but only CYP2B increased (5-fold) after SQ treatment. Six OH-PBDE metabolites were found in mice after 34-day DE-71 treatment and all were able to bind recombinant ERalpha. Para-hydroxylated metabolites displayed a 10- to 30-fold higher affinity for ERalpha compared to ortho-hydroxylated PBDEs. Para-OH-PBDEs induced ERE-luciferase and produced an additive effect when coadministered with beta-estradiol. DE-71 was also additive with beta-estradiol. At high concentrations (≥ 5x10-5 M), ortho-OH-PBDEs were antiestrogenic in the ERE-luciferase assay. In conclusion, DE-71 behaves as a weak estrogen in both MCF-7 breast cancer cells and ovariectomized adult mice. Mice strain, |

Fluid Mulch Sprayed On The Field And Overlaid With Pigmented Latex $71.99 To study the effect of reflecting mulches on growth pattern and yield components of eggplant (Solanum melongena L., cv. 'Millionaire'), beds were treated with synthetic latex film as a mulch base. Colored pigments derived from oil-based paints in black, white, red, blue, yellow and silver were sprayed on the mulch base to provide differential coloration. Each experimental unit included three rows of 7.3 meters with eight plants per row. Each treatment was replicated in four blocks at two separate locations. Plants grown on silver-pigmented beds produced significantly greater fruit numbers and total fruit weight than other treatments. After eight harvests, up to 236% yield increase was observed in silver plots compared to the control. Initial flower and fruit set formations before harvest were significantly higher in silver plots compared to other treatments. Non-significant differences were observed with measurements of plant height and total dry weight of shoot and root within the treatments. It is assumed that altering microenvironment around the plants by mulch surface color is responsible for this variation. |

The Movies and Documentaries Increasing Awareness of Obesity and Fast Food: Super Size Me and Million Calorie March $19.75 Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on health, leading to reduced life expectancy and/or increased health problems. Body mass index (BMI), a measurement which compares weight and height, defines people as overweight (pre-obese) when their BMI is between 25 kg/m2 and 30 kg/m2, and obese when it is greater than 30 kg/m2. The primary treatment for obesity is dieting and physical exercise. To supplement dieting, or in case of failure, anti-obesity drugs may be taken to reduce appetite or inhibit fat absorption. In severe cases, surgery is performed or an intra-gastric balloon is placed to reduce stomach volume and/or bowel length, leading to earlier satiation and reduced ability to absorb nutrients from food. The book takes a look at the Documentary Super Size me as well as the movie Million Calorie March that were both created to increase awareness of obesity and |

Water conservation in biofuels development: Greenhouse and field crop production with biochar. $49.99 Biochar incorporation in soils has the potential to remove carbon from the atmosphere and to improve soil quality. This research focused on evaluation of the benefit of biochar incorporation in an Arizona soil. Different concentrations of biochar (charcoal from mesquite biomass-derived black carbon) were added to soil in greenhouse experiments. Seven common or potential Southern Arizona crops (alfalfa, wheat, cotton, grain and sweet sorghum, barley and switch grass) were evaluated in the greenhouse experiment. In this experiment; increased biochar concentration treatments produced greater height and biomass production in alfalfa. Sorghum biomass production also increased with biochar concentration. There were no significant differences in biomass production in wheat and barley with increased biochar concentration. Switch grass biomass production had a significant negative correlation with increased biochar concentration. Sweet sorghum biomass production was evaluated in a field experiment conducted at the University of Arizona Red Rock Agricultural Center. A relatively small amount of biochar was incorporated in the top 20 cm of soil in one treatment and soil only was the other treatment: there were no significant differences in yield.;Water characteristic curves and bulk densities were measured for biochar/soil mixes. The FASE model was used to simulate evapotranspiration and crop yield for the field sorghum experiment and for several crops grown in the Valsequillo Irrigation District, Puebla, Mexico with measured soil parameters. The model predicted no significant increase in sorghum yield for the level of biochar incorporated in the soil. An increase in yield was predicted for Valsequillo crops. |
